Like many things in Augusta, Georgia, life sciences is built on tradition. This tradition dates back to 1818, when Augusta’s first City Hospital (now University Hospital) was built and operated by the city. Augusta’s life science tradition has continued for more than 192 years. Today, Augusta, Georgia is home 12 hospitals, 1 medical college, 2 life science/biotechnology incubators, and numerous life science companies. As Augusta continues to grow, we strive to foster a life science community that can take the reins in the 21st century and become a global leader in life sciences.
The Augusta BioBusiness Center is a life sciences business incubator that aims to assist medical device, bioinformatics, medical software, tele-medicine, and biotech start-up companies.
To leverage state and local resources to create an environment that will fast-track the growth of emerging life science companies.

Medical College of Georgia (MCG) - MCG was chartered in 1828 as an academy offering a single course of lectures. Currently, the university offers more than 40 academic programs in allied health sciences, dentistry, graduate studies, medicine, and nursing at the certificate, baccalaureate, masters, doctoral and first professional levels. Additionally, MCG offers residency training in medical and dental specialty areas.
MCGHealth–MCGHealth is an academic medical center with three (3) primary missions: patient care, education, and research. These missions set MCGHealth apart from community hospitals. MCGHealth strives to create an environment that combines a state-of-the-art-research environment conducting pioneering research with the best trained physicians and a learning environment dedicated to giving the best training to the next generation of care givers.
MCGHealth’s facilities includes the 478-bed MCGHealth Medical Center, an Ambulatory Care Center that houses more than 80 outpatient practices, a Specialized Care Center with Level 1 Trauma Center, the 154-bed Children’s Medical Center, and more. The newest additional to the MCGHealth family is the MCGHealth Cancer Center.
MCGHealth Children’s Medical Center – Opened in 1998, the MCGHealth Children’s Medical Center is the medical center in the community dedicated exclusively to children. This center offers primary and adolescent care, a full range of medical and pediatric surgical services, pediatric emergency services, a Level 1 (highest level) pediatric intensive care unit, a Level III-D (highest level) neonatal intensive care unit, and medical research and training programs pediatric specialists. MCGHealth Children’s Medical Center has one of only 2 Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) systems in Georgia.

University Hospital has received full Cycle II Accreditation with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) from the Accreditation Review Committee of the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
University Hospital’s Breast Health Center has been granted a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).

Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center - The Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center is a two-division Medical Center that provides tertiary care inmedicine, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, and spinal cord injury. The Downtown Division is authorized for 155 beds (58 medicine, 37 surgery, and 60 spinal cord injury). The Uptown Division, located approximately three miles away, is authorized for 315 beds (68 psychiatry, 15 blind rehabilitation and 40 medical rehabilitation). In addition, a 132-bed Restorative/Nursing Home Care Unit and 60 domiciliary are located at the Uptown Division.

Walton Rehabilitation Health System - Walton Rehabilitation Hospital is a not-for-profit rehabilitation hospital in Augusta, Georgia. The hospital offers adult and adolescent inpatient and outpatient programs for persons recovering from stroke, head injuries, spinal injuries, orthopedic injuries, chronic pain and other disabling illnesses and injuries.
